Maple Pecan Shortbread Squares

Updated: Nov 22, 2021

A healthy not-so-healthy recipe/dessert that consists of nuts and maple syrup where the sweetness and nuttiness balance each other out. Chewy. Crunchy. Edible perfection!

Yield: 16 pieces Cook: 35 minutes

Ingredients

1 cup all-purpose flour

¼ cup and 1 tablespoon brown sugar (for the dough)

½ cup softened butter

1 egg

¼ cup and 1 tablespoon brown sugar (for the pecan mixture)

3 tablespoons maple syrup

½ cup chopped pecans

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

  2. Combine the flour and brown sugar and mix thoroughly. Stir in the softened butter until a dough has formed. Spread and press down the dough on a 8x8 baking dish, and prick the flattened dough with a fork all around the surface area.

  3. Transfer the baking dish into the oven and bake for about 20 minutes or until golden brown. Meanwhile, beat the egg in a bowl with the brown sugar, maple syrup, and pecans. Once the 20 minutes is up, pour the pecan mixture over the shortbread and return the dish into the oven. Continue baking for 12-15 minutes. Remove from the oven and cut around the edges of the dish to prevent sticking. Let it cool off for a few minutes then cut into squares to serve. Done!
